A Modern Open Ecommerce System
After contributing to Apache OFBiz for over a decade, we decided to create our own product. Our clients appreciated OFBiz’s architecture but found the system outdated and lacking professional support. We envisioned a modernized system with enhanced applications, a new rendering system, fresh themes, and bug fixes. The OFBiz community was stagnant and unwelcoming, prompting us to forge our own path.
At Ilscipio, we developed Scipio ERP and released it on GitHub in 2014. As a core developer, I worked on the new templating toolkit, modern themes, addons, the content management system, and more. Scipio ERP is a versatile framework designed for various business types, with a strong focus on modern ecommerce.
Our system is fast and scalable. For instance, we served millions of users for 1&1, managed millions of products for Buchhandel, and built one of the UK’s fastest ecommerce stores for Jewellerybox. Scipio ERP has been adopted by clients like Jewellerybox.co.uk, Buchhandel.de, Sedo.com, Amadeus Travel, 1&1, and more.
And we were eager to innovate. To this day, I am still very proud of our flexible theming system “templating toolkit”, which, coupled with our interpretation of a Wordpress like CMS was very powerful! But we didn’t stop there, we also integrated AI for product, website, and category content creation, enhancing functionality. And we dabbled with new technology, whenever it became available: Scipio ERP became the first ERP system compatible with Bitcoin, running on the Lightning network. Our experience were published in two articles (Is the Lightning network ready for commerce? , The issue with Bitcoin in commerce) that made their rounds in the Lightning and Bitcoin scene.
